I didn’t make a plan for today. I stayed up too late last evening, and didn’t make a plan when I woke up this morning. I’m writing this entry on the 19th as I work on getting back in the saddle. Some lessons learned: Sometimes my work asks me to do things that I don’t get a charge number for. These should be my small tasks for the day. If you want to add a new habit, you’re going to have to commit a small task to it for a couple days in a row.

Once I made the ULine account, I think I realized that really what I’m looking for are one or two small parts storage bins, which run around $45 used or new.

I tried to set smaller expectations for what I was going to accomplish, which I think was a good thing. I’m finding it’s better to make plans to get a few things done, but nail those things, than to make plans to get a bunch of things done and get none of them done.

Camping. No entry.

No 123 for today. I got sick and tired yesterday, and spent time googling instead of journaling. From this, I learned two lessons. The first is a lesson that teachers know. When you get sick, you still have to write down your lesson plans for tomorrow even though you’re still sick. Just curling up in a corner and not tying up loose ends sounds relaxing, but you (and your substitute teacher) will wish that you didn’t.

Two day streak now. Doing this 1-2-3 technique with kids always means that you have some unexpected things come up, like when your kid wakes up 40 minutes earlier than usual, and uses up the time you were planning for one of your medium tasks. Another thing that I’ve empirically discovered about the 1-2-3 method is that small tasks can be used to “start” a task just to break the friction on it.

Welp, I failed to write my entry for yesterday. But I guess that’s okay. Unless you’re somebody’s employer, you generally don’t like watching somebody execute something perfectly. IT can be a little discouraging to feel like everyone around you is perfect and you’re the only screwed up person. So for everyone out there (except my employer), look! I failed at my goals from two days ago. What I learned in the process is that part of what makes the 1-2-3 method work is timeboxing.

Resurrection I’m going back into blogging again. My old blog slowly petered out. Part of the reason is that I made it so darn difficult to push changes to my site. The previous site was built on Pelican, which is a Python static site generator. It was hosted on an AWS EC2 instance. I had a script that would build the site, but it only worked on one computer (that I didn’t use very often).
